Red Cross Certifies
9 Montezuma
Babysitters
A babysitter’s
training class held
this summer by the
local American Red
Cross certified 9
babysitters. The
class was held on
Tuesday, June 20 at
the Presbyterian
Family Center in
Montezuma. Several
local youth, ranging
from 9 to 12 years
in age, participated
in this course to
gain knowledge and
skills needed to
care for a child.
The classes were
taught by Nicole Ver
Meer of the Iowa
Rivers Chapter. “I
believe it is very
important that
anyone caring for a
child has the
appropriate skills,
because you never
know when an
emergency will
arise,” said Ver
Meer.
The day consisted of
5 lessons including
obtaining necessary
information about
the child/children
before babysitting,
safe and responsible
babysitting, basic
care of all ages,
safe and age
appropriate play,
and first aid.
Throughout these
lessons, students
were able to talk
through a variety of
situations and
practice these
skills on each other
and baby manikins.
Several other Health
and Safety classes
are offered through
the local Red Cross.
